Nook HD review: a high-def tablet with the heart of a reader

DNP Nook HD review a highdef tablet with the heart of a reader

Barnes & Noble knows where it stands in the tablet race. Sure, the company has been plugging away at the space since the day the Nook Color made its transformation into a full-fledged tablet, but the Nook, it seems, is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7, when discussing low-cost tablets. As such, the company seems to rarely mention its devices without discussing the competition -- Amazon in particular. In fact, at the launch event for the Nook HD and HD+, reps trotted out Kindle Fire HDs at every possible opportunity.

Seeing the two devices side by side, there's no question that Nook trumps the Fire in a number of categories, and the bookseller has gone a ways toward making the Nook HD stand out in a field full of bigger players. For one thing, the device is far more focused on the reading experience than the competition, a fact reflected in both hardware and UI decisions. The company has also taken a more aggressive approach toward marketing the device toward families. The question, then, is whether these features are enough to capture marketshare from the more prominent devices. See how the Nook HD stacks up after the break.

EU Naval Force Meets Somali Fishing Representatives and Elders ...

Rear Admiral Credendino and EU Naval Force staff with local Somali fishermen, clan elders and local authorities, on board the EU Naval Force flagship, ITS San Giusto

Rear Admiral Credendino and EU Naval Force staff with local Somali fishermen, clan elders and local authorities, on board the EU Naval Force flagship, ITS San Giusto

On Monday, 29 October 2012, the Force Commander of the EU Naval Force Somalia ? Operation Atalanta (EU NAVFOR), Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, met with local Somali fishing representatives, clan elders of coastal communities and local authorities on board the EU NAVFOR flagship, ITS San Giusto, off the northern coast of Somalia, near Bossaso.

This meeting was the first time that EU NAVFOR has engaged with representatives of local Somali fishing and coastal communities under the Somali Seafarers Initiative (SSI).

SSI is an initiative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) and the EU Naval Force, aimed at understanding fishing and security at sea for fishermen, from a local perspective.

SSI is a long-term project that aims to build lasting relationships based on understanding and mutual trust between EU NAVFOR and key representatives of Somali coastal fishing communities and local leaders.

By listening and talking to each other the parties exchanged views on the fight against piracy, the role of EU NAVFOR and the problems local fishermen face in Somalia and at sea. Moreover, the objective of SSI is to reassure local fishermen that the Naval Forces operating in the area are not a threat and that there is no reason to be scared of the military presence. Thus, SSI aims to encourage Somali fishermen to return to sea and re-establish fisheries livelihoods in Somalia as an alternative to piracy.

All those involved agreed that piracy cannot be stopped at sea alone, and that a solution must come from the land. Upon completion, all present expressed the wish that this be the first of a series of future meetings.

?This is the first time that we have met? ? said Rear Admiral Credendino ? ?and we all sincerely hope that this is the first step on a long path we will walk together?.

During the meeting, much of the focus was on the role that the recently created EUCAP Nestor mission will have in building the maritime capabilities of Somalis.

EUCAP Nestor is a civilian mission conducted under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and augmented with military expertise. The objectives of EUCAP Nestor are to:

  • Strengthen the Rule of Law sector in Somalia, with an initial focus on the regions of Puntland and Somaliland. In particular, the mission will support the development of a coastal police force and the judiciary.
  • Strengthen the sea going maritime capacity of Djibouti, Kenya and the Seychelles.

Additionally, the EU is supporting the development of the Somali fishing sector?under the regional ?SmartFish Programme? (total regional funding: 21 Million euro) implemented?with the UNFAO.? The EU also has a strict policy against illegal fishing (IUU) and all EU flagged fishing vessels have been requested to remain outside the 200 nautical mile zone off the coast of Somali. This has also been recommended by Atalanta.

US economy likely grew slowly last quarter

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The government's snapshot Friday of the U.S. economy's growth will be its last before Americans choose a president in 11 days.

It probably won't sway many undecided voters.

The first of three estimates of growth for the July-September quarter will likely sketch a picture that's been familiar all year: The economy is growing at a tepid rate, slowed by high unemployment, corporate anxiety over an unresolved budget crisis and a global economic slowdown.

Economists' consensus forecast is that the government will estimate that the economy grew at an annual rate of 1.8 percent last quarter. That would exceed the 1.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. But it would be too slight to signal robust job creation, which is what the economy needs most.

And it would give Mitt Romney's team evidence to argue that the economy is growing at an unacceptably subpar pace.

"We are stuck in this half-speed growth mode," said David Wyss, an economics professor at Brown University.

The government's report covers gross domestic product. GDP measures the nation's total output of goods and services ? from restaurant meals and haircuts to airplanes, appliances and highways.

Economists think GDP growth in the final three months of 2012 could resemble the preceding three quarters, with the economy expanding at an annual rate of around 1.8 percent. If that estimate proves accurate, growth for the entire year would equal 1.7 percent, even slower than the 1.8 percent growth for 2011.

Since the recovery from the Great Recession began in June 2009, the U.S. economy has grown at the slowest rate of any recovery in the post-World War II period. And economists think growth will remain sluggish at least through the first half of 2013. Some analysts believe the economy will start to pick up in the second half of next year.

By then, they think the tax and spending confrontations that have brought gridlock to Washington should be resolved. Employers that say they won't hire or expand much until federal tax and regulatory uncertainties are resolved could start to spend more.

Some economists say the Federal Reserve's continued efforts to boost the economy by lowering long-term interest rates will help generate more borrowing and spending by consumers and businesses.

"By the time we get into the second half of 2013, the Fed's efforts to kick the economy into overdrive should be having an impact, and there should be some sort of resolution of Washington's budget issues," said Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Gordon College in Massachusetts.

Still, a panel of 40 top forecasters with the National Association for Business Economics isn't expecting significant improvement over the next two years. Last week, they predicted GDP growth of just 2.2 percent in 2013.

One problem is that companies are holding off on purchases of computers, industrial equipment and other long-lasting manufactured goods. Corporate spending has been lackluster for four straight months.

Corporate investment helped the U.S. economy emerge from the Great Recession. But businesses have grown more cautious since spring, in part because customer demand has remained modest and exports have declined as the global economy has slowed.

Many companies worry that their overseas sales could dampen further if recession spreads throughout Europe and growth slows further in China, India and other developing countries. Businesses also fear the tax increases and government spending cuts that will kick in next year if Congress doesn't reach a budget deal.

Business investment has slumped even as consumers have become more hopeful about the economy. Consumer confidence in October reached a five-year high. Retail spending surged in September, mainly because Americans bought more cars, iPhones and appliances. And home sales are up this year, contributing to a nascent housing recovery.

Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

Housing is rebounding after a six-year slump. New-home sales jumped last month to the highest annual pace in 2? years. And in September, builders broke ground on homes and apartments at the fastest pace in more than four years.

This year will likely be the first time in six years that housing has contributed to economic growth.

p2e Ministry accuses protesters of ?predetermined intention to violate law?

photo of the demonstration released by the Interior Ministry

KUWAIT: The Interior Ministry criticized the use of the term ?arrest? to describe its action of apprehending the suspects during last Sunday?s demonstration, indicating that this term contained implications different from legal measures taken against troublemakers. ?The term ?arrest? is only used in the Penal Code in regulations pertaining to cases of call up in which the Interior Ministry can release orders to arrest citizens of hostile countries or states whose ties with Kuwait are severed,? the ministry said in a statement released by the Security Media Department yesterday.

p2a4 Ministry accuses protesters of ?predetermined intention to violate law?

Some of the photos of the demonstration released by the Interior Ministry

It further explained that the word ?arrest? indicates ?temporary deprivation of individual freedom and basic rights,? and that individuals can be arrested ?without the need for physical evidence.? Instead, the ministry urged media outlets and social networks users to use correct legal terms to describe the detention, which include ?subpoena, seizure, detention and remand.? The ministry argued that these terms better describe ?the legal procedures adopted by the Criminal Investigations General Department against the suspects.?

p2c1 Ministry accuses protesters of ?predetermined intention to violate law?

Meanwhile, the ministry reiterated in a separate statement that special task forces did not prevent gatherers from expressing their opinions or demonstrating peacefully at the Iradah Square on Sunday, arguing at the same time that certain gatherers deliberately disobeyed orders. ?The demonstrators were given the choice between peaceful demonstration at the Iradah Square or facing legal deterrence in case they staged unlicensed marches,? the statement read.

The ministry said that the protestors had ?predetermined intention to take the hard option through violating the law and attacking police, as part of their efforts to execute their evil plan to instigate [the public] to take part in different marches within the commercial area of Kuwait City.?

It further accused the protestors of ?obstructing traffic at the Arabian Gulf Road, creating riots and chaos as well as damaging private properties.? In the meantime, the ministry accused ?the troublemakers of posting fabricated information and misleading photos on social networks with the intention of creating public confusion.? Instead, the ministry released photographs showing demonstrators using social networks as well as children ?brought to obstruct police?s work.?

The ministry referred to minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Hmoud Al- Sabah?s ?goodwill gesture of releasing the suspects,? but insisted that legal procedures will continue. It also criticized political figures ?who instigated young citizens and pushed them to the streets, but disappeared and left them to face an unknown fate.?

Rebel Catholic group expels Holocaust-denying bishop

PARIS (Reuters)- A rebel Catholic traditionalist group has expelled British-born Bishop Richard Williamson who deeply embarrassed the Vatican by denying the Holocaust shortly before he was readmitted to the Church three years ago.

The Swiss-based Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), whose four bishops were excommunicated from 1988 to 2009, said on Wednesday it took the step because Williamson had disobeyed his superiors.

Williamson, 72, an opponent of recent SSPX efforts to win full reintegration into the Church, caused an international uproar with his ultra-hardline views broadcast only days before the Vatican lifted the bans on him and three other bishops.

His presence in the SSPX leadership appeared to be a hurdle to any accord with the Vatican. But negotiations have broken down in any case so his departure may not have an effect on the group's relations with Rome.

The statement said Williamson was excluded for "having distanced himself from the management and the government of the SSPX for several years and refusing to show due respect and obedience to his lawful superiors".

The Vatican declined to comment on the SSPX statement, which said Williamson was excluded by the group on October 4.

The SSPX opposes modernizing reforms decided by the 1962-1965 Second Vatican Council. In his bid to end its schism, Pope Benedict has promoted the old Latin Mass the SSPX champions and lifted the excommunication bans on its bishops.

But talks aimed at creating a special status for the group within the Church have broken down because it has refused to accept the Council as legitimate, especially its recognition of other Christian denominations and Judaism as valid faiths.

Williamson's denial of Holocaust gas chambers in a television interview in January 2009, just before the excommunication bans were lifted, sparked a wave of criticism from Catholics and Jews.

Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the Vatican to distance itself from him. The Vatican ordered Williamson to recant his denial but he apologized only for any misunderstanding he had caused.

A German court later fined Williamson for publicly denying the Holocaust took place, which is a crime in Germany.

The Williamson affair was also embarrassing because it showed how isolated the Vatican was in the Internet age.

In an unprecedented letter to Catholic bishops, Benedict admitted he did not know Williamson's far-right wing views despite the fact the bishop had published them on the Internet. The Vatican would use the Internet more in future, he said.

Since that uproar, Williamson had used the Internet to publish commentaries critical of the SSPX's efforts to reach an accord with the Vatican.

Miesha Tate pushes for Zoila Gurgel to get better Bellator billing

Former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate is not afraid to speak her mind. Last week, she caused a stir when she said there are circumstances where it's acceptable for a man to hit a woman. This week, she's speaking up on behalf of Bellator flyweight champion Zoila Gurgel.

Despite holding a belt and fighting near her hometown, Bellator has placed Gurgel's non-title bout with Casey Noland on the untelevised undercard. For good reason, Tate was annoyed by this and tweeted Bellator president Bjorn Rebney.

Tate sent several more tweets like these and encouraged her followers to tweet Bellator and Bjorn Rebney until they put Gurgel on the main card. Rebney explained his reasoning to MMA Fighting.

"Zoila's been plagued by injury after injury over the last 19 months, having not fought since March, 2011," he wrote. "We felt that the best road back for her did not include rushing her into a major fight against one of the top-ranked women in the world. This is not a world title fight as it's made significantly north of the 115 weight limit where she holds our title. Depending on how Zoila feels and performs on Friday, we can then determine the next appropriate step back."

But that doesn't explain why a champion isn't on television. Brian Rogers is not in a "world title fight," nor is he part of the Bellator tournament bouts that will be aired, but he's on the televised card. When fellow champions Michael Chandler and Ben Askren fought non-title bouts, their fights were on the main card.

When Tate spoke on men hitting women who hit them first, she was railing against a double standard. It looks like she's still fighting one this week.

How Do Ethics Make You a Better Person in the Workplace ...

shake hands

By: David Ingram, a special to Overdrive

Ethical employees are those who make decisions in the best interest of their employers, co-workers and outside stakeholders in addition to themselves. Workplace ethics center on such diverse issues as discrimination, fraud, theft and personal politics. Although all people are intrinsically valuable, ethical employees can actually be more financially valuable to their employers, and more valued by co-workers and peers. Understanding how ethics can make you a better person in the workplace is a solid starting point for a commitment to always doing the right thing.

Trusting Relationships

Ethical employees build trust in their workplace relationships, allowing people to open up to them, share private information and feel more at ease communicating with them. Areas of ethics that affect trust include honesty, fairness and avoiding rumors. Gaining the trust of your co-workers can enhance your productivity by making it easier for you to communicate and work with others in the workplace. Employees who spread distrust can meet resistance when seeking help from others, but trusted co-workers can always find a helping hand. Gaining the trust of your managers can open doors for new responsibilities at work, possibly leading to promotions and pay raises.

Team Cohesiveness

The ethical commitments of individual employees has an effect on team and department performance in addition to individual performance. Being an ethical employee makes you a better team player, always making positive contributions in group settings and never hindering group progress. An employee who is stealing from company funds, for example, can cause divisions, rumors and resentment among accounting employees as co-workers begin to suspect others of participating. An employee with a solid commitment to ethics can identify and expose issues of theft early.

Value to Employers

Companies live or die on the trust they place in their employees. An unethical employee in the ranks can land an entire company in legal trouble, or can destroy a company?s hard-earned reputation in the marketplace. Ethical employees are better people to have working for any company, as top managers and business owners can rest assured that their employees adhere to ethics policies and use ethical reasoning when making company decisions.

Personal Wellness

Being an ethical employee can make you a better person on the inside in addition to increasing your value to others. Unethical acts such as theft and fraud, for example, can weigh people down with guilt and paranoia, resulting in hostile and fearful attitudes at work and at home. Employees who spread nasty rumors or lies about others can live in a constant state of paranoia, as another example, as they try to remember which lies they told to whom and when. Using ethics to guide all of your decisions at work can grant you peace of mind, emotional stability and the ability to cultivate lasting friendships. This can increase your job satisfaction, in addition to giving you more serenity for life in general.

TV, devices in kids' bedrooms linked to poor sleep, obesity

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Children who bask in the nighttime glow of a TV or computer don't get enough rest and suffer from poor lifestyle habits, new research from the University of Alberta has shown.

A provincewide survey of Grade 5 students in Alberta showed that as little as one hour of additional sleep decreased the odds of being overweight or obese by 28 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively. Children with one or more electronic devices in the bedroom?TVs, computers, video games and cellphones?were also far more likely to be overweight or obese.

"If you want your kids to sleep better and live a healthier lifestyle, get the technology out of the bedroom," said co-author Paul Veugelers, a professor in the School of Public Health, Canada Research Chair in Population Health and Alberta Innovates ? Health Solutions Health Scholar.

Veugelers, director of the Population Health Intervention Research Unit that works with the Alberta Project Promoting active Living and healthy Eating (APPLE Schools), said the research is the first to connect the dots on the relationship between sleep, diet and physical activity among kids. Nearly 3,400 Grade 5 students were asked about their nighttime sleep habits and access to electronics through the REAL Kids Alberta survey. Half of the students had a TV, DVD player or video game console in their bedroom, 21 per cent had a computer and 17 per cent had a cellphone. Five per cent of students had all three types of devices.

Some 57 per cent of students reported using electronics after they were supposed to be asleep, with watching TV and movies being the most popular activity. Twenty-seven per cent of students engaged in three or more activities after bedtime.

Researchers found that students with access to one electronic device were 1.47 times as likely to be overweight as kids with no devices in the bedroom. That increased to 2.57 times for kids with three devices, with similar results reported among obese children.

More sleep also led to significantly more physical activity and better diet choices, researchers found.

Co-author Christina Fung noted that children today are not sleeping as much as previous generations, with two-thirds not getting the recommended hours of sleep per night. In addition to healthy lifestyle habits, a good night's sleep has been linked to better academic outcomes, fewer mood disorders and other positive health outcomes, she said.

"It's important to teach these children at an earlier age and teach them healthy habits when they are younger."

3 Ways to Buy Houses with No Money Down - Creative Real Estate ...

One of the best things about investing in real estate is the ability to leverage the investment. Other investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and gold cannot be leveraged effectively .

leverage

The ability to leverage real estate and control assets for a fraction of the price is a huge advantage.

With real estate, you can buy an asset and leverage it by paying a bank a 25% down payment. For example, if an investor wants to buy a $100,000 duplex, bank financing will allow him to buy the asset with a $25,000 down payment.

The ability to leverage real estate and control assets for a fraction of the price is a huge advantage when investing in real estate.

But what if an investor would like to invest in real estate without putting any money into the investment?? What if an investor does not have extra money available to invest?? Is that an attainable leveraging goal for investors?

Yes! Here are three ways real estate investors can buy houses with no money down.

1. Subject To

How would you like to buy houses without needing to get a new mortgage? Buying houses ?subject to? means that the buyer makes the acquisition without paying off the existing mortgage on the property.

The ownership of the property changes to the new owner, but the debt does not get formally assumed and does not get paid off at closing. The mortgage remains in the name of the person who originally took the loan when the house was originally purchased.

I was speaking to a good friend of mine in Colorado recently and he told me that he has now purchased over 100 homes for his rental portfolio. All acquisitions were made using subject to financing.? Subject to investing can provide opportunities to buy houses with no money down and without the investor needing to get a new mortgage.? These opportunities are available from motivated sellers who need debt relief or may be facing transfers.

2.? Lease Options

Control without ownership is the essence of tying up houses on a long-term lease with an option to buy. Think of this investing model as seller financing in disguise.

The real estate investor gains a long-term lease?at least five years in length. The lease also contains an option to buy the house at today?s price. An option provides the investor the legal right to buy but is not a legal obligation to buy the house. As part of the lease agreement, the investor gains the right to sub-lease the property to other tenants.

That is the beauty of master leasing investing. What did the real estate investor gain in this model?

The investor has control of a real estate asset with no money down. With this control, he can rent the house for the next five years and enjoy the cash flow.? He also has the right, but not obligation, to actually buy the house at any time in the negotiated option period.

3.? Joint Venture ? Private Lender

Fire your bank and succeed massively! If you do not need to go to the bank, you will not need to put down a 25% down payment. Instead, find a private lender to put up all the money for your real estate deal and pay them a great return.

The financing with your private lender can be structured as traditional debt financing with points and interest, but no down payment, or you can structure a joint venture using equity financing.

With equity financing, the real estate investor does all the work but provides none of the money for the deal. Both parties in the joint venture agree to share the rental income and future equity. The equity can be split 25/75, 50/50 or how ever you work it with your private lender.

This market is the perfect storm for real estate investors. There?s a lot of distressed inventory available at great prices and a very strong rental demand. Don?t let the balance in your checkbook hold you back from investing. You can still invest in real estate with no money down. Structure deals directly with sellers, use private lenders, and be ready to capitalize now.

'MyXperia' trademark filing suggests Sony might launch its own cloud service

There's no shortage of cloud storage sites and apps, but it looks like Sony might be trying to get a little more involved in ethereal storage. According to this European trademark filing spotted by Juggly, Sony Mobile has staked a claim to MyXperia, outlining that the service (or mobile app) involves itself in the "upload, storage, retrieval, download, transmission and delivery of digital content and media." In short, the kind of stuff you already do with your cloud service of choice. While Sony has no shortage of cloud-based services, MyXperia.com currently sends you to a bare-bones login page, underneath the Sony Mobile umbrella -- it looks like we'll have to wait for some account credentials before we get to take a look.

With more and more people using their phones to browse the Internet, it?s imperative that companies focus on developing mobile tools that can best showcase their products. This means being able to both create a strong brand identity, while being able to demonstrate excellent customer service and an understanding of individual user needs.

Some of the best mobile tools that can contribute to this effect include analytics like Tello, online pay services such as Obopay, and mobile interface builders like Hootsuite. These tools, and more, can significantly boost your business without costing a fortune.

What follows are five of the top tools you can use to

Tool #1: Tello. Tello is a tool that can help you gather information on customers. It uses a realtime feedback system whereby messages and quality reports can be added from different locations. Tello can help to boost and sharpen your marketing push by allowing you to respond to criticism, while building on positive feedback. The simple interface similarly means that you can tailor the tool to your particular business.

Tool #2: Obopay. An online pay tool that?s ideal for mobile phones, Obopay has been running since 2005, and makes it straightforward to set up and process transactions. This kind of tool is excellent for small to medium sized businesses that want potential customers to be able to buy from them in a safe and efficient way. Even better, Obopay is designed to be easily used by non-profits, and includes convenience fees, rather than transaction fees, as a core part of its appeal. Individual tools include widgets, text links, and web page buttons.

Tool #3: Tweetvite. Make use of the marketing potential of Tweetvite to communicate an event or product launch on a major scale. Tweetvite, also used for social gatherings, allows you to create a promotional page and launch address for events that can be sent out to all followers. RSPVs can also retweet the invite to their followers through hashtags, creating the potential to reach a huge number of people with a simple, low cost marketing tool.

Tool #4: Hootsuite: This tool is ideal for monitoring different social networks at the same time and feeding back mentions and conversions in realtime to a single dashboard. Recently added features like Hootsuite Conversations make it possible to create single chats and IMs across different social networks. The main strength of something like Hootsuite is that it enables you to much more effectively deal with different levels of traffic from social networks in a way that doesn?t overload you with information.

Tool #5: MobiCart. A tool that allows you to create your own mobile web storefront, MobiCat represents a straightforward way of adding an online shopping feature for your products. A template enables you to customize a storefront to your products and branding, with the further advantage of providing support outside of a traditional website. Other features include checkouts and self designed apps that can be integrated into an overall shopfront. Excellent if you just want to create a reliable mobile storefront for your business that doesn?t require a lot of technical knowledge.

U.S. candidates pass over tough China questions in final debate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney vowed on Monday to get tough on China's trade policies, but they mostly used the Asian giant as a foil to air competing domestic economic programs in their final debate before the November 6 election.

In a showdown that was supposed to be limited to foreign policy, both men focused on the economic aspects of the complex U.S.-China relationship, touching only briefly on the security challenge that fast-rising China poses to a U.S.-led alliance system in Asia.

Human rights, China's support for states that are foes of the United States and intensifying maritime territorial disputes that pit China against U.S. allies Japan and the Philippines went unmentioned in the 90-minute debate in Boca Raton, Florida.

Also unmentioned was the impending leadership change in the world's second largest economy, as well as China's economic slowdown, which could have profound consequences for U.S. exporters.

China is "both an adversary, but also a potential partner in the international community if it's following the rules," said Obama, who touted his administration's efforts to hold China accountable for breaching global trade rules.

The loss of American jobs due to the absence of a level playing field in trade is "why we have brought more cases against China for violating trade rules than ... the previous administration had done in two terms," said Obama.

"And we've won just about every case that we've filed, that has been decided," he said. The Obama administration has prevailed in about eight World Trade Organization cases against China, industry sources calculate.

Romney, whose campaign rhetoric toward China has often been harsh, agreed that "we can be a partner with China. We don't have to be an adversary in any way, shape or form."

But he and the president soon turned the China question back to domestic affairs.

Romney cited a U.S. valve-maker whose products he said were being counterfeited in China, right down to the serial numbers and packaging.

"We have an enormous trade imbalance with China, and it's worse this year than last year, and it's worse last year than the year before. And so we have to understand that we can't just surrender and lose jobs year in and year out," he said.

Obama said investment in education and research was the true way to stay ahead of China.

"Over the long term, in order for us to compete with China, we've also got to make sure, though, that we're ... taking care of business here at home," he said.

Obama repeated criticism that Romney had invested in firms that sent jobs to China and added that Romney's budget would not address U.S. needs in education and research. Romney said government deficits and military cuts under Obama made the United States appear weak in Chinese eyes.

'CURRENCY MANIPULATOR' DECLARATION ON DAY ONE

Romney repeated a pledge he first made early this year to press China to stop suppressing the value of its currency to make Chinese exports cheaper than those of U.S. competitors.

On revaluing its currency, China is "making some progress; they need to make more," said the former Massachusetts governor.

"That's why on day one, I will label them a currency manipulator, which allows us to apply tariffs where they're taking jobs," said Romney.

The U.S. Treasury Department named China a currency manipulator five times from 1992 to 1994, but it has been 17 years since any country has been so designated.

A finding of manipulation requires the Treasury to start negotiations on exchange rates, both bilaterally and through the International Monetary Fund.

John Frisbie, president of the U.S.-China Business Council, a group of businesses that trade with China, said that engagement with China had led to the strengthening of China's yuan, or renminbi, by more than 30 percent since 2005.

"Evidence has shown that the best way to make progress is through comprehensive engagement and legal actions - not political rhetoric," he said in a statement.

Romney shrugged off concerns his approach would trigger a trade war, saying there was already a trade war going on that had led to a U.S. trade deficit

"It's a silent one. And they're winning," said Romney.

Scott Paul, executive director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, an advocacy group that champions pressing Beijing over currency and other trade barriers, said Monday's debate "didn't really break new ground on China."

But he said the focus on the trade deficit with China and its impact on manufacturing was long overdue.

"The real winner was American manufacturing. It's clear that both candidates believe it is critically important that China play by the rules," Paul said.

Research and Markets: Non-Life Insurance in India, Key Trends and Opportunities to 2016 Profiles the Top Non-Life Insurance Companies in India and Outlines the Key Regulations Affecting Them

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/mjp7lj/nonlife) has announced the addition of the "Non-Life Insurance in India, Key Trends and Opportunities to 2016" report to their offering.

?Non-Life Insurance in India, Key Trends and Opportunities to 2016?

The Indian non-life insurance segment registered significant growth during the review period, despite the global financial crisis in 2009. The increase was due to the favorable regulation for motor insurance such as compulsory third-party liability insurance and rising property prices in major Indian cities including Mumbai and Bangalore. This was further encouraged by rising income levels, which increased demand for motor and agriculture insurance.

This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the non-life insurance market in India:

- It provides historical values for India's non-life insurance market for the report's 2007-2011 review period and forecast figures for the 2012-2016 forecast period

- It offers a detailed analysis of the key sub-segments in India's non-life insurance market, along with market forecasts until 2016

Key Highlights

- The Indian non-life insurance segment registered significant growth during the review period, despite the global financial crisis in 2009.

- The segment is dominated by public sector insurers, and the combined market value of all the private non-life insurers is less than half of the total non-life insurance written premium.

- The motor insurance category is expected to further increase its dominance in the non-life segment over the forecast period.

- The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority's (IRDA's) proposal to increase the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit for insurance companies from 26% to 49% will be a key growth driver for the non-life insurance segment.

Dow, S&P end flat; Yahoo gains after the bell

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow industrials and the S&P 500 ended flat on Monday after a late-day bounce, as worries about slower global growth hitting corporate sales were offset by earnings that beat expectations.

Technology shares led the day's gains and pushed the Nasdaq up 0.4 percent, as shares of Apple Inc jumped 4 percent to $634.03. Apple is scheduled to report results on Thursday.

The S&P 500 closed on Monday just below its 50-day moving average of 1,434 - seen as a strong support level - after trading well below it for much of the session.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar became the latest to exceed expectations on the bottom line - or profit - but fall short of revenue forecasts on the top line. The stock fell early, but the Dow component ended up 1.5 percent at $85.08.

Caterpillar also slashed its 2012 forecast for the second time this year due to slowing global demand.

Earnings have generally been beating lowered expectations, but revenues are weak and profit warnings remain frequent.

"The issue with the earnings reports is the outlooks for next year and next quarter are maybe a little worse than people expected," said Bryant Evans, investment advisor and portfolio manager at Cozad Asset Management, in Champaign, Illinois.

Of the 123 S&P 500 companies that have reported results so far, 60.2 percent have topped analysts' expectations for earnings, but 61 percent have missed revenue forecasts, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Third-quarter earnings are expected to fall 2.4 percent from a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 2.38 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 13,345.89. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index inched up just 0.63 of a point, or 0.04 percent, to 1,433.82. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 11.33 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 3,016.96.

After the bell, shares of Yahoo gained 4.2 percent to $16.43 after the Internet company's quarterly earnings beat expectations and its chief executive officer said it is economically attractive to repurchase the stock at current price levels. Yahoo's stock ended regular trading at $15.77, down 0.4 percent.

Shares of Texas Instruments dipped 0.04 percent to $27.78 after the bell. The U.S. chipmaker posted a decline in revenue and forecast more weakness this quarter. The stock ended regular trading at $27.79, down 0.1 percent.

During the regular session, shares of mining company Freeport-McMoRan lost 1.5 percent to $40.58 after it said third-quarter profit fell sharply, missing Wall Street's estimates, because of a big drop in gold production in Indonesia.

On the up side was coal miner Peabody Energy Corp . Its stock surged 11.8 percent to $28.95 after the company reported a third-quarter profit that beat analysts' expectations as improved U.S. margins and higher Australian sales volumes offset price declines.

Ancestry.com Inc jumped 7.8 percent to $31.44 after the company said it will be acquired by a group led by European private equity firm Permira in a $1.6 billion deal.

Volume was roughly 5.8 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with the year-to-date average daily closing volume of 6.52 billion.

Decliners slightly outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a ration of about 15 to 14. On the Nasdaq, decliners were about even with advancers, with 1,233 shares falling and 1,219 stocks rising.

Scotland Senior Championships: Matthew Carder beats Andrew Gilliland to win Men?s Singles title

Scotland?s Matthew Carder proved his mettle on court and remained successful in winning the Men?s Singles title after defeating his lower ranked compatriot Andrew Gilliland in the final clash at the West of Scotland Senior Championships 2012 at Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday, October 21.

The impressive Carder, who was the second seeded player in the main draw of the championship, had to dig into his arsenal to outplay his rival in a hard-fought three-set contest.

Carder played impressive badminton throughout the tournament and remained on track in the final match. He employed every skill to grab victory in rubber games by taking 37 minutes on the court.

In the meanwhile, the fifth seeded Gilliland created trouble for his rival in the title match by playing to his maximum potential but failed to remain consistent in the final set and went down to his higher ranked opponent in a reasonable manner.

In the first game, both shuttlers played with tremendous precision and stayed close in the opening half.

However, Carder lost her focus in the arena as he could not put up strong show and eventually lost the game with a 17-21 score on the board.

In the second set, the in-form Carder delivered a phenomenal feat in the arena as he played shots with impressive variations from starting rallies.

Carder was incredibly quick in taking the bird quite early and he did not encounter any trouble in executing his shots in right areas and took a reasonable lead until the break.

After the interval, Gilliland tried to play attacking badminton but failed to take control of rallies and remained trailing behind his rival.

The impressive Carder was quite calm and composed on court as he did not commit mistakes and won the second game with a tight margin of 23-21.

Gilliland was once again in all sorts of trouble in the final set as he received a punishing treatment from his opponent who was flawless on court.

Carder was unmatched on court and he faced no trouble in winning the final set with a staggering 21-7 score on the board.

The second seeded Carder won this title match in three games with a decent total of 17-21, 23-21 and 21-7.

Asian Markets - Business Insider

Markets are deep in the red early in the Asian trading session.

Japan's Nikkei is down 1.2 %.

Australia's S&P/ASX is down 0.9%.

Moments ago, Japan reported that its exports plunged 10.3 percent in September, which was worse than the 10.0 percent drop expected by economists.? Exports to China fell 14 percent? and exports to Europe tanked 26 percent.

U.S. futures are down just marginally, with Dow futures down 7 points.? This suggests much of today's selling is just Asia catching up to Friday when the Dow plunged 205 points.

Milky Way's black hole getting ready for snack

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Get ready for a fascinating eating experience in the center of our galaxy. The event involves a black hole that may devour much of an approaching cloud of dust and gas known as G2.

A supercomputer simulation prepared by two Lab physicists and a former postdoc suggests that some of G2 will survive, although its surviving mass will be torn apart, leaving it with a different shape and questionable fate.

The findings are the work of computational physicist Peter Anninos and astrophysicist Stephen Murray, both of AX division within the Weapons and Complex Integration Directorate (WCI), along with their former postdoc Chris Fragile, now an associate professor at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, and his student, Julia Wilson.

They came up with six simulations, using the Cosmos++ computer code developed by Anninos and Fragile, which required more than 50,000 computing hours on 3,000 processors on the Palmetto supercomputer at Clemson University in Columbia, S.C.

Previous simulations of the upcoming event had been done in two-dimensions, but the Cosmos++ code includes 3D capability, as well as a unique "moving mesh" enhancement, allowing the simulation to more-efficiently follow the cloud's progression toward the black hole.

The black hole is known as Sgr A*. "Sgr" is the abbreviation for Sagittarius, the constellation near the center of the Milky Way. Most galaxies have a black hole at their center, some thousands of times bigger than this one.

"While this one is 3-to-4 million times as big as our sun, it has been relatively quiet," according to Murray. "It's not getting fed very much." Contrary to their name, black holes can appear very bright. That's because gas orbiting them loses energy via friction, getting hotter and brighter as it spirals inward before falling into the black hole.

The composition of the G2 cloud is still a mystery.

Astronomers originally noticed something in the region in 2002, but the first detailed determinations of its size and orbit came only this year. The dust in the cloud has been measured at about 550 Kelvin, approximately twice as hot as the surface temperature on Earth. The gas, mostly hydrogen, is about 10,000 Kelvin, or almost twice as hot as the surface of the sun.

Its origin is still unknown.

Murray says: "The speculation ranges from it having been an old star that had kind of a burp and lost some of its outer atmosphere, to something that was trying to be a planet and couldn't quite manage it because the environment was too hot."

As the cloud approaches the black hole and begins to fall into what Murray describes as "a gravity well" beginning next September, it will begin to shed energy, causing it to heat to incredibly high temperatures, visible to radio and X-ray telescopes on Earth as well as orbiting satellites such as NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

But it won't be a collision course.

The point at which a stellar object can no longer escape being swallowed by a black hole is known as the Schwarzschild radius, a quantity whose value depends on the black hole's mass, the speed of light and the gravitational constant.

The cloud will actually pass far enough away that it will escape the point of no return by approximately 2,200 Schwarzschild radii, which in this case is about 200 times as far as Earth is from the sun.

But the supercomputer simulations show that the cloud will not survive the encounter.

According to Anninos: "There's too much dynamical friction that it experiences through hydrodynamic instabilities and tidal stretching from the black hole. So a lot of its kinetic energy and angular momentum will be dissipated away and it will just sort of break up into some sort of incoherent structure. Much of it will join the rest of the hot accretion disk around the black hole, or just fall and get captured by the black hole. It will lose a lot of its energy but not all of it. It will become so diffuse that it's unlikely that any remnant of the gas will continue on its orbital track."

The close encounter will take several months. The entire event is predicted to last less than a decade.

The simulation is posted on the Web. It shows the cloud modeled as a simple gas sphere, near the point in its orbit where it was first discovered. As it approaches Sgr A*, a process known as tidal stretching increasingly distorts the cloud. By the end of 2012, the cloud will be nearly five times longer than it is wide.

Along with tidal stretching, the cloud also experiences resistance in the form of ram pressure as it tries to plow through the hot interstellar gas that already fills the space around Sgr A*. The interactions of G2 with this background gas cause further disruptions to the cloud from Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Collectively, these effects act to strip some material from the cloud and feed it into Sgr A*.

An article describing the simulation research will appear in an upcoming issue of the Astrophysical Journal.
