Armed Forces Bowl 2012: Rice Defeats Air Force, 33-14 (VIDEO)

FORT WORTH, Texas -- When Rice freshman quarterback Driphus Jackson was suddenly thrust into action in the Armed Forces Bowl, he drove the Owls within 2 yards of a tying touchdown before his errant pitch.

Jackson more than made up for that miscue that ended the first half.

After starter Taylor McHargue was knocked out the game because of a concussion, Jackson threw for 264 yards with two second-half touchdowns to Jordan Taylor, and Rice beat Air Force 33-14 on Saturday.

"I couldn't get down (after the fumble). The guys had all the confidence in the world in me," Jackson said. "Things slowed down for me in the second half."

Rice (7-6), which had to win four in a row just to get bowl eligible, has won both of its bowl games under sixth-year coach David Bailiff. Before their 2008 Texas Bowl victory, the Owls had lost their only four bowl games since winning the 1954 Cotton Bowl.

"This football team has overcome a lot of adversity and really played well down the stretch," Bailiff said. "We had a very motivational talk with our team just before the winning streak, and our coaching staff and players worked hard and kept improving every game."

And this is a Rice team with only seven seniors, three of them tight ends.

The Owls were 1-5 after a loss at Memphis on Oct. 6, and their only loss was 28-24 to Conference USA champion Tulsa.

"We had our ups and downs. To cap it after the start we had, it means the world," said running back Turner Petersen (nine carries for 81 yards).

Air Force (6-7) scored on consecutive drives in the second quarter with backup quarterback Kale Pearson in the game. But the Falcons had a season-low 214 total yards.

Jackson's first series ended with a bad pitch near the goal line only 2 seconds before halftime, when the Owls trailed 14-7. It was the third lost fumble by Rice in the second quarter.

"We didn't make a lot of adjustments at halftime," said Taylor, who had nine catches for 153 yards and three TDs, including a 16-yarder from McHargue in the first quarter. "The coaches just told us to execute and protect the football better than we did in the first half."

Jackson had consecutive completions of 25 and 22 yards before a 2-yard keeper and then a 22-yard TD to Taylor on Rice's opening drive of the second half.

The Owls went ahead to stay, 21-14, when Jackson hit six passes in a row to set up Charles Ross' 2-yard TD run.

"As soon as the starter went out, we knew there were adjustments we had to make," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "We put an enormous amount of strain on our defense. Any time you make only 12 first downs, you're going to tax your defense."

Jackson, who started against Houston when McHargue had a shoulder problem, completed 15 of 21 passes and rushed for 32 yards.

"After having one start under my belt, I knew what to expect," Jackson said. "I had an idea of how to manage the game. They gave me the keys and told me to go."

McHargue never returned after a helmet-to-helmet collision on a 5-yard run with about 5 minutes left in the first half.

He put his head down and ran into defensive back Steffon Batts, and fumbled. McHargue was noticeably wobbly while being helped to the sideline.

The Falcons then went 35 yards in nine plays for a 14-7 lead. Mike DeWitt converted fourth-and-1 with a 2-yard run, and Wes Cobb scored on a 1-yard run.

Jackson then came in for the Owls and had keepers of 5 and 14 yards before a 23-yard pass to Taylor. After another 10-yard pass for first-and-goal from the 2 before Jackson's bad pitch.

McHargue hit 6 of 8 passes for 31 yards. He stood on the sideline after halftime wearing a warmup suit and a cap.

Since the Falcons' last game, senior quarterback Connor Dietz has graduated from the academy and been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Dietz ran six times for 11 yards and completed only 1 of 3 passes.

Pearson wasn't must better, 2-of-8 passing for 44 yards with six carries for 11 yards. But he was on the field for both of Air Force's scoring drives with a 9-yard TD run

The Falcons have made a school-record six consecutive bowl appearances under Calhoun, but are 2-4 in those games (1-3 in the Armed Forces Bowl). Air Force lost four of its last five games to finish this season.

Chris Boswell made field goals of 24 and 25 yards in the fourth quarter, before Jackson hit Taylor for a 34-yard TD with 1:38 left.

Boswell, who made six field goals of at least 50 yards during the regular season, had apparently made a 52-yarder early in the second quarter before officials blew the whistle for an Air Force timeout. Boswell got another try, but pushed it wide right with about 9 minutes left in the first half.

That's when Pearson took over for Air Force, leading them 66 yards in 10 plays. He had a 15-yard pass and ended the drive with a wide sweeping run to get into the front corner of the end zone to tie the game at 7.

"We really struggled. We had a good second quarter," Calhoun said. "But there's no way you win this game playing well in one quarter."

Texas looks to build on Alamo Bowl win

SAN ANTONIO -- In the end the balloons fell from the sky and swirled around the jubilant, and yes relieved, Texas players and coaches.

A tumultuous season on and off the field was over with an ending that, while not to script, featured enough feel-good moments that it was clear, at least on this day, nobody would burst their bubble.

And now, following a 31-27 win over No. 13 Oregon State (9-4) in front of 65,277 fans at the Valero Alamo Bowl Saturday, the wonder is if that bubble in on the rise.

That's long been the claim of Texas coach Mack Brown. This youth-laden team was one built for the future, Brown continually contended in the face of increasing criticism. The future started 15 minutes early for Texas. The No. 23 Longhorns (9-4), an underdog who played the part to Tony-worthy accolades for three quarters, showed fourth-quarter mettle and moxie rarely seen from a program whose heartbeat had been faint for several seasons.

Finally there was a team coming together. For three years and three quarters there were questions if this collection of players, coaches and the person at the top was right for Texas football. One win won't end those questions. It will quiet them if only because of the way that win came about. Texas had not won after trailing by 10 points all season. The Longhorns trailed 27-17 after David Ash threw an ill-timed interception in the third. That's when Texas folds, Bevo shrugs and the Longhorns start talking about their next recruiting class.

Not this time. The words they had thrown around -- commitment, earn the right, swagger, never quit -- became tangible feelings and were, for the first time, manifested on the field in that fourth quarter.

I tested this game out on my own family over the Christmas holiday?and had three generations playing happily together. Volunteer recruitment sessions have begun at Canada Games House on Quebec Street

Prince George, BC - 774 days and counting until Prince George hosts the 2015 Canada Winter Games...

With the countdown clock on the Games' webpage quietly ticking down, volunteer recruitment efforts are ramping up.? The Canada Games House on Quebec Street hosted a number of volunteer recruitment sessions earlier this month that saw more than 60 people attend.

More sessions are being held mid-January - the 14th, 15th, and 16th - with anyone interested being asked to RSVP by emailing volunteer@canadagames2015.ca, or phoning 250-596-2015 when the office re-opens on January 2nd.

It's expected that as many as 4500 volunteers will be needed to host the largest multi-sporting and cultural event ever held in our region, from February 13th until March 1st, 2015.

The 2015 Games Host Society is also seeking input from athletes from across the region who will be eligible to compete in a bid to meet its top priority of providing an 'exceptional athlete experience'.? Click here to submit an application for the Athlete Approved Advisory Group.

Whale of a tale: Pakistani fishmonger now pop star

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Muhammad Shahid Nazir is a testament to the age-old adage that if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man to sing about fish, his song will shoot up the British pop chart.

The 31-year-old Pakistani fishmonger catapulted to fame in recent weeks in the unlikeliest of circumstances: while hawking frozen snapper and mackerel for one British pound ($1.61) at Queens Market in London.

Not comfortable with shouting about his merchandise to attract customers, as many vendors do, he came up with a simple ditty that someone caught on video and posted on YouTube earlier this year. It became a viral sensation and has been viewed over 7 million times.

"One Pound Fish changed my whole life," said Nazir, who returned to Pakistan on Thursday to a hero's welcome and has been inundated with requests to perform and do advertisements. "I am so happy now."

To describe the song as catchy would be a gross understatement. It drills deep into your brain and sits like a lyrical jack-in-the box that goes off every few minutes, causing one to break into song involuntarily to the amusement, or perhaps growing despair, of those nearby.

"Come on ladies, come on ladies, one pound fish! Have a, have a look, one pound fish!" sings Nazir, as he points to his wares behind him. "Very, very good, one pound fish! Very, very cheap, one pound fish!"

In an era in which the Internet seems to bestow almost everyone with 15 minutes of fame, Nazir's YouTube video could have been the end of the story. But Warner Music offered Nazir a deal to record a techno-infused version of "One Pound Fish," he said. In a Bollywood-style video, he performs in a snazzy suit alongside scantily-clad dancers to a South Asian-influenced pop beat.

The music video has been viewed nearly 9 million times since it was posted on YouTube about three weeks ago. As the song gained momentum, people began talking about it as a serious contender for the fabled No. 1 Christmas single in the United Kingdom ? the song that tops the chart in the week the holiday falls. Past chart-toppers include The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You."

In the end, "One Pound Fish" made it to No. 29 on the top-40 chart. It was beaten by another Internet sensation, PSY's "Gangnam Style," which clocked in at No. 6. The No. 1 spot was clinched by a version of the Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by The Justice Collective, a group of star musicians who recorded the charity single for victims of a stampede at a soccer stadium in 1989 that killed 96 people.

Nazir definitely doesn't view missing out on the No. 1 Christmas single as a setback. He has returned to his home country to get a visa for France for the release of his hit song there and also has plans to take "One Pound Fish" to the United States, where he hopes it will make a big splash.

It has been quite a ride. He grew up in the little-known town of Pattoki near the eastern city of Lahore. His father owned a transport company, but his passion was always music, and he spent his youth singing both religious songs and pop hits by stars like Michael Jackson.

He traveled to Britain to study but eventually got a work permit and started working as a fishmonger in London nine months ago, he said. He now wants to pursue a career in music, but the fish stall in London will always hold a special place in his heart.

"I can't forget England, Queens Market, my fish stall because that place changed my whole life," said Nazir.

Hubble eyes the needle galaxy: IC 2233, one of the flattest galaxies known

Dec. 28, 2012 ? Like finding a silver needle in the haystack of space, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a beautiful image of the spiral galaxy IC 2233, one of the flattest galaxies known.

Typical spiral galaxies like the Milky Way are usually made up of three principal visible components: the disk where the spiral arms and most of the gas and dust is concentrated; the halo, a rough and sparse sphere around the disk that contains little gas, dust or star formation; and the central bulge at the heart of the disk, which is formed by a large concentration of ancient stars surrounding the Galactic Center.

However, IC 2233 is far from being typical. This object is a prime example of a super-thin galaxy, where the galaxy's diameter is at least ten times larger than the thickness. These galaxies consist of a simple disk of stars when seen edge on. This orientation makes them fascinating to study, giving another perspective on spiral galaxies. An important characteristic of this type of objects is that they have a low brightness and almost all of them have no bulge at all.

The bluish color that can be seen along the disk gives evidence of the spiral nature of the galaxy, indicating the presence of hot, luminous, young stars, born out of clouds of interstellar gas. In addition, unlike typical spirals, IC 2233 shows no well-defined dust lane. Only a few small patchy regions can be identified in the inner regions both above and below the galaxy's mid-plane.

Lying in the constellation of Lynx, IC 2233 is located about 40 million light-years away from Earth. This galaxy was discovered by British astronomer Isaac Roberts in 1894.

This image was taken with the Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys, combining visible and infrared exposures. The field of view in this image is approximately 3.4 by 3.4 arcminutes.

Ring sparks talk of Wozniacki-McIlroy engagement

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) ? Australian media reported Friday that Caroline Wozniacki arrived to play at the Brisbane International with a diamond ring on her left ring finger, sparking speculation that she and boyfriend Rory McIlroy had become engaged.

The Australian Associated Press and other media outlets said Wozniacki wore the ring at the airport and as she prepared for her afternoon practice session at the Queensland Tennis Centre but removed it to play on court.

McIlroy, the world's No. 1 golfer, accompanied Wozniacki on her trip Down Under.

The Brisbane International begins Sunday with Wozniacki's first match in a tournament that includes Serena Willliams and Maria Sharapova, if fit.

The UFC's end-of-the-year cards are usually stacked. Despite injuries, UFC 155 is no different. It features intriguing bouts that will answer some burning questions.

Did a knee injury hold back Cain Velasquez the first time he fought Junior dos Santos? When the two first met up last November, Velasquez reportedly had a badly injured knee. He was knocked out in 64 seconds. This time a (seemingly) healthy Velasquez will get to show if he deserves the heavyweight belt.

Has Chris Leben returned to form, for really real this time? Since Leben was on the original "Ultimate Fighter," he has been a man who wrestled with his demons. Most recently, those demons took the form of a banned pain killer which resulted in a one-year suspension from the UFC. Against Derek Brunson, Leben can show he's again the man who knocked out Wanderlei Silva.

Can Tim Boetsch be the next guy to challenge Anderson Silva? Though his original bout with Chris Weidman was called off because of an injury to Weidman, Boetsch still has another opportunity to show he can beat up opponents. He wants a chance to beat up Silva,* and this bout with Costa Phillippou is an opportunity for Boetsch's fighting to shine.

Or should Alan Belcher be the man to take on Silva? It's been more than three years since Belcher lost a fight. His last four fights have been stoppage wins. An impressive win over Yushin Okami could put him in line to fight for the middleweight belt.*

Is Todd Duffee still the knockout artist who once graced the octagon? Back in 2009, Duffee knocked out Tim Hague in a mere seven seconds. After that, the hype train was running behind him full steam. It was derailed when Mike Russow came back to knock Duffee out in the third round of their bout. Duffee was cut from the UFC, and is getting another shot at the octagon on Saturday. He'll fight Philip De Fries on the Facebook preliminaries, and get a chance to show if he can still knock people out very quickly.

*Assuming the next middleweight belt is based on competitiveness and earning a title shot by fighting, not by calling opponents out. Considering what has happened recently in the UFC welterweight and light heavyweight divisions, there are no guarantees.

Great home improvement projects

A recent study has shown that more and more women are beginning to take on home improvement projects that typically belonged to the man in the home. The Washington Post recently revealed that women are beginning to outshine men in this typically male-dominated area as women become more economically independent and start fixing things around the hose for themselves. Economically independent women are making more money now than they ever have, and because of that there are twice as many single female homeowners than men. Additionally, the number of women who DIY has increased due to the recession.

There are tons of power tools that are now being manufactured and marketed directly to women, so this may not be surprising to some. The single women that own homes don?t have a man to rely on to get the job done, so they are taking to addressing home repairs themselves rather than spending money on someone to come fix their issue for them. Additionally, many women believe some of the smaller repairs should be easy for women to do on their own so they don?t have to wait for their husband to get home and fix it. However, it?s not just small repairs ? some women are even taking on bigger projects like repairing roof issues. It is believed that this trend will continue, putting women in the forefront of another typically male-dominated activity.

Miami is not my main?market, but I show property down in Miami and the surrounding areas from time to time when dealing with cash investors or serious buyers.? As long as I have 24-48 hours advance notice to set up showings, and I do my job, I have not had any major difficulties with the agents in Miami.?
I've had a few bumps in the road, with agents not showing up to appointments or agents not picking up their phones, but it's expected at this point for me.
Do you know how active the market is currently in Miami?? There is a serious?lack of good inventory, and there are cash investors everywhere.? Many of these buyers are putting bids on?properties sight unseen, and LLC's and LP's are dominating the investment market.?

How Do I Tell My Friend Her Place Smells Like Cat Pee? | xoJane

I recently visited the apartment of a friend for the first time and got a narsty whiff of excessive cat pee. I was only there for about 5 minutes to drop something off, and I don?t know her all that well, so I don?t even know if she has cats. It?s one thing to break it to a close friend that her apartment reeks. It?s another thing entirely to unload your opinions on an acquaintance/stranger whose emotional intelligence has yet to be revealed to you. I?m kind of a pussy when it comes to this sort of thing, so I?d rather not say anything at all and pray that I never have to go over there again. But is that really the best way to handle this situation?

My former cat, Joga (named after Bj?rk?s song, which matches her personality dead-on), now belongs to my parents in a feline-owner switcheroo stealthily pulled off by my mom. She once read in some crazy Russian newspaper that cats are very handy in lowering high blood pressure, and asked if she could ?borrow? Joga for a couple of weeks to test out her new ?scientific? discovery. I lovingly obliged, sending the cat off to Pennsylvania, and yada yada yada, she still lives there like a fat furry princess two years later.

But when Joga still lived with me in my pathetically cramped apartment, I?m proud to say my living quarters were never cat-pee-scented. None of my friends ever told me either way or anything, so maybe I?m just as na?ve as the current cat pee offender. My lovely circle of friends can be brutally honest sometimes though (Recent comments I've received: ?Your hair is super fried, but you could sorta pull it off if you were dressed like a surfer chick,? ?I hate your outfit, nothing matches,? and ?I have never seen you NOT dress slutty.?), so I?m going to assume they would have told it to me straight.

Since we?re on the topic of pet odor, let?s say you have a cat and you want to get to the root of the problem. How does one keep the pet stank out of the house, anyway?

I consulted my friend, a crazy cat lady who has not one but TWO cats (a ballsy move for New York City, imho) for advice. In all the years I?ve known her, her apartments have always smelled so fresh and so clean you?d never even know she had cats (of course, you?d know if you were Facebook friends with her, bitch posts photos of her cats and other random cats like it?s her JOB). Here is what she told me:

1. Clean the litter box every day. If you?re lazy, do it AT LEAST every other day.
2. Use Arm and Hammer brand cat litter, it?s awesome.
3. Mix in an odor-neutralizing powder in the litter (Arm & Hammer makes this stuff, too).
4. Place an odor absorber near the litter thingy.

Mmmm, orange-scented urination.

5. Dump the entire box of litter and wipe down the litter box and any affected area as often as possible. Once a month MINIMUM.
6. You are what you eat. Feed your cats high quality food for nicer-smelling droppings.

Smelly cat, smelly cat, what are they feeding you?

7. Invest in litter box ?furniture.? It can be pricey, but so worth the feeling of someone coming in and asking, ?Where on earth is your litter box??

For the price, I?d expect a rhinestone-encrusted model to match my iPhone, but it?s much classier than looking at a cat toilet that doesn?t flush.

This is pretty basic advice if you ask me (except for #5, which I never did. It?s really gross and I hate it, but you should do it), but for some reason some people just don?t get it, or maybe their sense of smell isn?t that great and they think it?s all good or something.

Now, some cats are gonna be dicks and disrespect your authority by refusing to cover up their daily deeds in the litter box, or they?ll leave little presents lying around for you in your household. If you are one of these people, these rules don?t apply. All I can say is I?m sorry and don?t piss off your cat, whatever you do. Good luck.

If you?re paranoid about your place smelling off, sans or avec pets, just use common sense and bomb it with air fresheners. Just do me a favor and use fancy stuff (Yankee candles = NO) so it looks like you know how to accessorize rather than trying to hide something.

Anyway, back to my friend with the cat pee issue she is seemingly unaware of. I have thought long and hard about this and I still don?t have a solution. I could get all passive-aggressive-like on her and share this article on Facebook, hoping she sees it and magically realizes it?s about her. Do you have a better suggestion?

The list of life's certainties has gotten longer. Along with death and taxes we can now include information overload. The amount of data generated on a daily basis has exploded, overwhelming people and organizations alike. This creates an opportunity for many types of investors, including private equity firms, to turn information overload into smart data that can drive decision-making at the highest levels of enterprise.

For private equity investors this means two things: Investing in the emerging leaders who are building the apps, infrastructure and services that businesses need in order to capitalize on the data revolution, and ensuring that our portfolio companies are effectively using these capabilities to drive the success of their businesses.

Welcome to the Big Data opportunity:? Research firm IDC expects Big Data to grow from $3.2 billion in 2010 to $16.9 billion in 2015. Peter Sondergaard, Gartner's global head of research, says that by 2015 we'll see 4.4 million jobs devoted to the global support of Big Data, with 1.9 million based in the U.S. He also predicts a jobs multiplier effect ? each IT job created by Big Data will generate three more positions outside of IT.

How new is this era, exactly? Some say that we are still in the nascent stages of the Big Data revolution, and the way to participate is via early-stage venture capital firms taking stakes in young startups. This is actually not the case. What we are witnessing is the evolution of enterprise intelligence, with companies continuing to refine their data strategies and sector winners beating their competitors by using their customer, market and product data more effectively.

Until now, Big Data was not synonymous with "smart data." Business intelligence until recently has meant enabling IT departments to warehouse and organize information that might be reviewed periodically by senior managers.? The intelligence was on the periphery of the decision-making process. Still, most enterprises adopted these tools very broadly and investors in these companies profited. IBM acquired Cognos.? Oracle acquired Hyperion.? And innovation moved on to the next set of emerging leaders.

The second act of Big Data is about action. This time intelligence will go beyond reporting. It will live at the heart of the organization, not at the edges. It will involve moving from historical insight to predictive information, enabling managers to make smarter decisions. To match these new capabilities, enterprises are building a new layer of infrastructure, applications and services.? No industry will remain untouched.? Investors have many options for participating in Big Data. While winners will be found among the startups and early stage venture capital firms providing the infrastructure layer, we believe that big successes will come from enabling the business users, providing intelligence applications and services or designing entirely new business models within verticals.

The winners of the second act of Big Data are now emerging. How can an organization place itself among them? First, it needs to understand the opportunities and the threats of this continuing, massive change. Second, it needs to start investing now in people and technology in order to avoid missing out as the second act unfolds.

A new set of Big Data investment opportunities exists in players ranging from the law enforcement and healthcare sectors to finance and government. We believe that Big Data is transforming how enterprises approach business issues. Providers of enabling technologies and business innovators all have opportunities for enormous success here. Who will be the winners in Big Data's second act? The list will certainly include private equity firms who can effectively direct investment in the trend. Iraqi telecom Asiacell hopes to raise $1.3 billion

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Asiacell, one of Iraq's three mobile service providers, said Tuesday it is looking to raise $1.3 billion through what would be the country's biggest stock offering yet.

A successful floatation on Baghdad's low-volume stock exchange could reassure international investors, many of whom remain wary of the risky Iraqi market nearly a decade after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

The company plans to offer 67.5 billion shares for at least 22 Iraqi dinars, or just under 2 cents, apiece when it launches the initial public offering on Jan. 3. Investors will have until Feb. 2 to submit orders for the shares.

"We're delighted to be able to provide the chance for all Iraqis to participate in our future by taking a stake in Asiacell," Managing Director Faruk Rasool said in a statement. "We're confident in our future as Iraq's mobile industry continues to grow."

The shares being offered represent a quarter of Asiacell's total share capital. The Gulf state of Qatar's government-backed Qatar Telecom owns 53.9 percent of Asiacell, which is based in the northern Iraqi Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah.

A number of the company's founding shareholders will be cashing out at least part of their investment with the floatation.

Asiacell competes against Zain Iraq, part of Kuwait's Zain, and Korek, an affiliate of France Telecom.

The three companies are required to list shares on the stock exchange as a condition of their 15-year operating licenses, which cost $1.25 billion when they were acquired in 2007. All three missed a deadline in August 2011 to offer shares to the public.

Asiacell began offering cell phone service in Iraq's highly autonomous northern Kurdish region in 1999. Mobile phone services did not exist in the rest of Iraq until after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein.

The company now boasts nearly 10 million subscribers and says its network covers 97 percent of Iraq's population.
