Tigers acquire reliever Veras from Astros

DETROIT (AP) ? The Detroit Tigers added some help for their shaky bullpen Monday, acquiring reliever Jose Veras from the Houston Astros for minor league outfielder Danry Vasquez and a player to be named.

Veras is 0-4 with a 2.93 ERA and 19 saves this season, and the 32-year-old right-hander has struck out 44 in 43 innings with only 14 walks.

"We are pleased to add an experienced arm to our bullpen," Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "Jose can pitch in a variety of roles, provides depth in the bullpen, and complements the roles of Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly."

Detroit entered the season with a lot of uncertainty at the closer spot, and although Benoit has pitched well in that role of late, the AL Central-leading Tigers still needed bullpen depth. Aside from Benoit and Smyly, none of their other relievers have been all that effective on a consistent basis.

Veras has been a steady contributor while bouncing from team to team in recent years. He posted a 3.75 ERA with Florida in 2010, a 3.80 ERA with Pittsburgh in 2011 and a 3.63 ERA with Milwaukee last season.

Houston signed him to a one-year deal last offseason, and the last-place Astros could certainly afford to trade their closer if the opportunity to acquire a solid prospect presented itself. Vasquez is only 19, but he was ranked by Baseball America as the sixth-best prospect in Detroit's system before this season.

Vasquez hit .281 with five home runs and 39 RBIs in 96 games for Class A West Michigan this year.

"We are excited to get an outfield prospect of Danry's caliber. He adds to an already formidable group of prospects at the A ball level," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said. "Jose will be missed as a team leader both on and off the field."

Benoit has converted all 10 of his save chances for the Tigers this season, and the left-handed Smyly is 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA in 61 innings. In Veras, Detroit now adds a right-hander who can pitch in the late innings.

Before this trade, the Tigers' top right-handed options in the late innings ? aside from Benoit ? were probably Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon. Alburquerque has struggled with his control, and although the hard-throwing Rondon has looked better lately, he's still fairly unproven.

Detroit's deadline deals have worked out well the last couple years. The Tigers acquired starter Doug Fister from Seattle in 2011 and added starter Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante in a deal with the Marlins in 2012. Not only did those three players provide help when they arrived, but they're also all still with the team.

This trade probably won't generate as much buzz as those deals, but it helps fill a need for a Detroit team that's hoping to return to the World Series after being swept by San Francisco a year ago.

  • ObamaCare Will Cost Gator Domino?s $70,000 To $100,000 In Extra Costs. ?The extra year should clear up confusion about the employer mandate, said Freddie Wehbe, franchise owner of Gator Domino?s. After attending several local and corporate seminars and hearing from consultants, ?no one had the same answers,? he said. Wehbe said he spent about 40 hours trying to calculate his costs of paying for coverage or penalties, arriving at $70,000 to $100,000 a year, ?but there was no clear formula about exactly how it would work.? The company decided not to cut employee hours, but would have to raise prices, he said.? (Anthony Clark, ?Local Companies Adjust To Costs Of Affordable Care Act,? Gainesville Sun , 7/27/13)

(Anthony Clark, ?Local Companies Adjust To Costs Of Affordable Care Act,? Gainesville Sun , 7/27/13)

  • If Health Care Costs Continue To Rise For Crime Prevention Security Systems, The Company Plans To Shift Full-Time Employees To Part-Time. ?John Pastore is majority owner of both Crime Prevention Security Systems and Universal Security Monitoring, two companies that will count as one ? with about 60 total employees ? under a provision of the act designed to thwart attempts to avoid the employer mandate by splitting companies. The companies already provide health coverage to all employees. Insurance costs rose 20 percent this year and Pastore said if the costs go up too much more, they would look at moving some employees to part-time positions.? (AP) ? President Barack Obama visited tornado-devastated Moore, Okla., Sunday, consoling people staggered by the loss of life and property and promising that the government will be behind them "every step of the way."

"I'm just a messenger here," the president said, saying "folks are behind you" across America. He offered moral and monetary support in the wake of the monstrous EF5 tornado that killed 24 people, including 10 children, last Monday afternoon.

Standing with Gov. Mary Fallin and other state and federal officials, Obama noted a substantial rebuilding job ahead and said that "our hearts go out to you."

"This is a strong community with strong character. There's no doubt they will bounce back," he said. "But they need help."

The White House said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already provided $57 million in rebates and incentives to help build about 12,000 storm shelters in Oklahoma. "These storm shelters can be the difference between life and death," presidential spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters accompanying Obama to Oklahoma on Air Force One.

For Obama, Sunday's visit had an all-too-familiar ring.

Only five months into his second term, he has traveled to the northeast to console people in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, and visited Connecticut and Arizona to comfort people traumatized by shooting rampages. He also has undertaken his consoler-in-chief role at the site of plant explosions and mine disasters, not to mention a series of natural disasters including Joplin, Mo., and the Jersey Shore, which was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last year.

Once on the ground, Obama urged the American people to make contributions, saying the damage was "pretty hard to comprehend."

Shortly after his arrival on a partly cloudy day, Obama rode past grassy fields strewn with scattered debris, witnessing devastation so awesome that it appeared as if garbage had literally rained from the sky. His first stop was the demolished site of the Plaza Towers Elementary School, where seven students were killed when the tornado turned the one-story building into a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal.

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand. As he walked, the demolished school was on his left and on his right, homes as far as the eye could see were reduced to piles of rubble. Vehicles were turned upside down and toys like a pink doll carriage and children's books were strewn with furniture and ripped out wall insulation. Every tree had been stripped of its leaves and bark.

Obama at one point joined the Lewis family, which lost their home behind the school. He said the important thing was that they survived and could replace their things.

"What a mess," he told their son Zack, a third grader at the shattered school. Zack's father, Scott, ran into the school just before the storm hit and ran with his terrified son back to their home's storm shelter.

"You've got some story to tell," Obama told the boy. "This is something you'll remember all your life."

Obama later met privately with victims' families at Moore Fire Department Station (hash)1, which has turned into a command center with dozens of first responders sitting at folding tables where fire trucks are normally parked. Obama marveled that they saved so many lives "given the devastation."

"I know this is tough," he told superintendent Susie Pierce as he gripped her hand.

As he descended the stairs upon landing at Tinker Air Base near here, Obama was greeted first by Fallin, who had said earlier she appreciated the visit, but that her state also needed quick action from FEMA.

The Republican governor said that so far, the agency has done a great job of speeding relief and cash assistance to affected families, but said she's concerned about the long run.

"There's going to come a time when there's going to be a tremendous amount of need once we begin the debris clearing, which we already have, but really get it cleared off to where we need to start rebuilding these homes, rebuilding these businesses," she said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''And we know at different times in the past, money hasn't come always as quickly as it should."

Fallin said the money is particularly vital for the victims. "A lot of people lose their checkbooks, they lose their credit cards, they lose their driver's license, their birth certificates, their insurance papers, they lose everything, and they have no cash. And some of the banks were even hit, the ATM machines, so people need cash to get immediate needs," she said on CBS.

Earnest touted the federal contributions so far, including Obama's signing of a disaster declaration within hours of the storm to speed aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Earnest said that 450 FEMA personnel were working on the ground in Oklahoma and have delivered 43,000 meals, 150,000 liters of water and thousands of cots, blankets and tarps. He said 4,200 people have applied for disaster assistance, and $3.4 million in payments have been approved.

Among the tornado victims were 10 children, including two sisters pulled by the strong winds out of their mother's grasp, an infant who died along with his mother trying to ride out the storm in a convenience store and seven students at Plaza Towers. Many students were pulled from the rubble after the school was destroyed.

BBC iPlayer for Android adds support for 10-inch tablets, improves user interface

BBC iPlayer for Android adds support for 10inch tablets, improved user interface

It's simple: the numbers don't lie. Clearly aware of the many, many hours viewers are squeezing out of their tablets, the BBC has, for the better, made its iPlayer for Android more friendly with 10-inch models. Folks using the app will no longer have to rely on a shortcut to the website, with the BBC iPlayer now offering native support for those larger Android slates. The changelog also notes some tweaks to the UI on smartphones and 7-inch tablets, but mum's the word on what the changes were exactly. Either way, we're sure owners of, say, a Nexus 10 will be happy to hear there are fewer steps required to catch up with their favorite shows.

How sustainable is Switzerland? | Science Codex

In 1998, researchers at the ETH Zurich developed an energy policy model that could provide energy for a growing world population and at the same time protect the environment. Through the use of efficient technologies and processes, the industrialised countries should reduce their energy consumption to 2000 watts per inhabitant ? the global average. The resources freed up could then help to combat poverty and hunger worldwide, without a reduction in living standards for the Western countries. The city of Basel has been acting as a pilot region and, in 2008, the residents of Zurich expressed themselves through the ballot box in favour of striving for a 2000-watt society. At the same time as reducing electricity consumption, the aim is also to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to the equivalent of one ton of CO2 per person per year.

Current per capita energy consumption in Switzerland meanwhile still exceeds the target for sustainability significantly, as the annual energy statistics from the Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) show. However, such statistics use a "top-down" approach: they divide total consumption by the number of inhabitants. Dominic Notter and Hans-J?rg Althaus from Empa and Reto Meyer from the ETH Zurich therefore carried out a study which considers the environmental footprint of Switzerland "bottom-up", i.e. based on the individual. The researchers were hoping to find households that already meet the criteria of the 2000-watt and/or 1-ton CO2 society. These examples could then be used to derive pioneering strategies for sustainability. The results of the study were published in the peer review scientific journal "Environmental Science & Technology".

Through a combination of survey and lifestyle analysis, the researchers gained a uniquely detailed view into the different lifestyles of the Swiss population. 3369 households answered questions on living, transport, food and consumer goods. With the help of the "ecoinvent" database, which is administered by Empa, the researchers calculated the individual energy consumption, along with the resulting greenhouse gas emissions and the overall impact of each household on the environment.

Western lifestyle and the 2000-watt society ? a contradiction?

The results were sobering: of 3369 households surveyed, not a single one met the conditions of the 2000-watt society. The economic theory that environmental impact increases with rising incomes and then decreases again was also not confirmed. Although it is true that energy consumption, emissions and environmental pollution do increase linearly with income, no reduction takes place (at even higher incomes).

Energy consumption among the households surveyed ranged from an "exemplary" 1400 watts per person to 20,000 watts ? ten times the target value ? with the average being 4200 watts. Overall, only two percent of those surveyed were below the 2000-watt threshold ? and even they emitted far more than one ton of CO2. However, what is significant is that these low-energy households are found in every income bracket. If households with an above-average income only consume 2 kW of energy, the goal of a 2000-watt society is achievable: low energy consumption is possible with a high standard of living.

Around a quarter of the energy is consumed as electricity ? therefore a massive reduction in overall consumption cannot be achieved simply by using more energy-efficient appliances. This is because a large part of the energy goes into heating and transport. The low-energy households scored particularly well in precisely these categories. Thus, the heated area per person was small and the heating requirement was relatively low. In terms of transport, such households were likewise very restrained: they limited themselves in terms of the amount of car driving and flying they did.

It is thus in the area of living and transport behaviour that researchers see the most potential for improvement. Even in low-energy households, the heated area per person is too large. Transport, particularly by car and plane, accounts for almost half the greenhouse gas emissions and causes serious environmental pollution: the sources of energy used in this area are primarily fossil fuels.

Doing without is unavoidable

Researchers believe that the transformation of our society into a sustainable 2000-watt society is possible ? but only with "the greatest possible effort". However, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is far more difficult. For this, Switzerland would have to obtain 80 percent of its total energy from low-carbon sources. With the closure of the nuclear power stations, this means renewable energies ? and not just for electricity, but also for heating and transport. This would require major technical advances ? and a change in lifestyle, according to the study.

The ambitious sustainability target is only achievable if individuals and the state strive towards a sustainability strategy together. This calls for action such as intelligent town planning that reduces the need for travel and political measures that promote environmentally friendly behaviour. A sustainable lifestyle is characterised by frugality, so although we can maintain our quality of life, it is necessary to forego extravagance. By living in a smaller heated area, limiting the use of transport and avoiding excessive consumption of goods and services, according to Notter, everyone could do their bit for sustainability.

China Media Claim Private Mars Colony Mission Is a Scam

Some people may find it hard to believe that a private mission will succeed in landing four astronauts on Mars in 2023, but several state-run media outlets in China are targeting the project with even harsher terms like "hoax" and "hype."

Doubts have been growing in China about the legitimacy of Mars One, the Netherlands-based nonprofit that seeks to establish a colony on the Red Planet 10 years from now. China's People's Daily newspaper, for example, ran a story Tuesday (May 21) headlined "Settlement on Mars a hoax? Over 10,000 Chinese people fall for it."

The headline refers to the 10,000 people from China who have applied to become Mars One astronauts since the organization opened its selection process last month. (Mars One charges a non-refundable application fee that varies from nation to nation; it's $11 for Chinese applicants and $38 for United States citizens.) [Mars One's Red Planet Colony Project (Gallery)]

Journalists discovered that Mars One's registered address is the home of the organization's co-founder and CEO, Bas Lansdorp, in the Dutch city of Amersfoort, People's Daily reported. And its headquarters are based at a rented office, the paper added.

"When the reporters went to the office of the company, they did not see any sign or logo of Mars One," the newspaper reported. "Lansdorp and his colleagues only occupied a few tables in a large open office area. Therefore, media assumed that Mars One project is probably a commercial scam."

People's Daily also said that "a Chinese scholar" regarded Mars One as "blatant commercial hype."

Mars One officials have fought back against the accusations and insinuations, stressing that their ambitious plans are for real.

"Mars One is making good progress on its plans. We have already contracted an American company to start work on the Environmental Control and Life Support System and Mars Surface Exploration Spacesuit System," Mars One's Aashima Dogra told the Global Times (a People's Daily affiliate) via e-mail, according to People's Daily.

That company is Arizona-based Paragon Space Development Corp., whose deal with Mars One was announced in March. Paragon is also working with the nonprofit Inspiration Mars Foundation on its plan to launch two astronauts on a flyby journey around the Red Planet in January 2018.

Lansdorp weighed in as well, telling yet another newspaper via email that it made sense to register the organization at his home address rather than at a rented office. And though delays are possible, the project remains on schedule at the moment, he added.

"Our plan is very complicated, but we knew that when we started," Lansdorp told China Daily, according to People's Daily. "We are committed to landing humans on Mars in 2023."

Lansdorp and other Mars One officials have stressed that the project is indeed feasible, requiring no big technological leaps.

"This mission is based on existing technology," Lansdorp said Tuesday at the Space Tech Expo 2013 conference in Long Beach, Calif. "Almost nothing new is needed. And each step is proved before risking lives on the next one."

Mars One estimates that it will cost about $6 billion to land four astronauts on Mars in 2023. The nonprofit aims to launch additional crews every two years thereafter, at a cost of around $4 billion each.

Mars One plans to foot the bill primarily by staging a global reality-TV event, with cameras documenting all phases of the project from astronaut selection to the colonists' first years on the Red Planet.

These Red Planet missions will all be one-way affairs; there are no plans to bring any of the pioneers back to Earth. Still, more than 80,000 people submitted applications to Mars One in the first two weeks after the selection process opened, officials said.

Michael Adebolajo, London Attacker, Influenced By Al-Shabab, Radical Preachers (PHOTOS)

LONDON -- The slaying of a British soldier in southeast London cast a spotlight on radical preachers that influenced Michael Adebolajo, the attacker seen in videos with bloody hands holding a butcher knife. It also raised questions about the reach of the terrorist group al-Shabab, after a British government official said one of the two men tried to go to Somalia to train or fight with the group. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the police investigation.

Here's a look at the preachers and al-Shabab.

Spiritual leader and founder of the group al-Muhajiroun. The group catapulted to notoriety after the Sept. 11 attacks by organizing an event to celebrate the airplane hijackers. Bakri, who now lives in Lebanon, had been one of the most aggressive voices of radical Islam in Britain. Members of the cell behind the July 7, 2005, London transit bombings also had links to the group. The government banned al-Muhajiroun after the July 7 attacks in which four suicide bombers killed 52 commuters, but it has re-formed under new names ? such as the Saved Sect or al-Gurabaa, which have also been banned. He is barred from returning to Britain. Bakri says the man depicted in the startling video that emerged after the death of British serviceman Lee Rigby was named Michael Adebolajo, a Christian who converted to Islam. Bakri recalled Adebolajo was a shy person eager to learn about Islam. <em>Radical cleric Omar Bakri, on bail in Lebanon on charges including incitement to murder, attends a sit-in in the southern Lebanese port city of Sidon on June 29, 2012, demanding the disarming of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, considered the most powerful military force in the country. The former head of the radical group al-Muhajiroun, an Islamist group notorious for glorifying al-Qaida and tied to terror plots at home and abroad. Choudary has in the past described the 9/11 hijackers on the United States as the "Magnificent 19." He also featured prominently in fiery protests against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. He is the manager of the Sharia Court in Britain. Sharia is Muslim law as derived from the Quran. Al-Qaida linked terrorist group in Somalia. Al-Shabab boasts several hundred foreign fighters, including those from the Middle East with experience in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. It has also recruited fighters from Somali communities in the United States and Europe. Al-Shabab once controlled almost all of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, but African Union and Somali forces pushed the militants out of the city in 2011. British officials have not said which of the two suspects attempted to link up with the group. <em>In this Wednesday, May 11, 2011 file photo, American-born Islamist militant Omar Hammami, then 27, also known as Abu Mansur al-Amriki, right, and deputy leader of al-Shabab Sheik Mukhtar Abu Mansur Robow, left, sit under a banner which reads "Allah is Great" during a news conference of the militant group at a farm in southern Mogadishu's Afgoye district in Somalia. Pakistan arrested American who was killed by drone

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? An American citizen killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan in 2011 was arrested by Pakistani authorities three years earlier but escaped after being released on bail, officials said Thursday.

The Obama administration revealed Wednesday that Jude Kenan Mohammad died in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan's tribal region, making him the fourth American citizen killed by unmanned aircraft in Pakistan and Yemen. The confirmation came as President Barack Obama is expected to deliver a speech in Washington on Thursday that will focus in large part on the administration's expanded use of drones to kill hundreds of people in those two countries and other places where terrorists have taken refuge.

U.S. officials didn't provide details, but Pakistani security officials said Mohammad was killed in late 2011 in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal area.

Mohammad was part of an eight-member group based in North Carolina accused of planning terrorist attacks. He was indicted by federal authorities in 2009 as part of an alleged plot to attack the U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. The other seven members were arrested, but authorities said Mohammad fled the U.S. to join Islamic militants in Pakistan's tribal region.

Pakistani intelligence officials arrested Mohammad on Oct. 15, 2008, after he tried to enter Mohmand, a tribal area considered a sanctuary for al-Qaida and Taliban militants, without the permission required for foreigners to travel to the tribal region.

Mohammad, who was 20 years old at the time, was carrying a laptop, a dagger, Islamic books and DVDs, a map of Pakistan and an American passport, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Mohammad's family said at the time that he was abroad visiting his Pakistani father, Taj Mohammad. The father owned a gas station in the northwest city of Peshawar, according to the son's police report from when he was arrested. U.S. consular officials in Pakistan visited the American and provided him with consular assistance.

Mohammad appeared in court in the town of Shabqadar in northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Oct. 17, 2008, wearing the long tunic and baggy trousers common among Pakistani men. Police said they were interrogating the American to determine why he had come to the area, but gave no indication at the time that they suspected he had links with militants.

Police officials said Thursday that Mohammad was not cooperative during their interrogations and claimed he was being mistreated.

Mohammad was eventually booked on charges of weapons possession and traveling without proper documents, but was released on bail. He failed to show up for a court hearing on Sept. 5, 2009, bolstering suspicions that he was on the run.

It's unclear what Mohammad did in the time between when he was arrested in Pakistan and killed in a U.S. drone strike.

CIA drone attacks have been a source of tension between Pakistan and the U.S. Pakistani officials regularly criticize the strikes in public as a violation of the country's sovereignty, although the government has been known to support at least some of the attacks in the past in secret. Pakistani officials have also claimed that the drones kill large numbers of civilians, an allegation the U.S. says is exaggerated.

U.S. officials rarely speak in detail in public about the drone program in Pakistan because of its covert nature.

The White House said Obama's speech coincides with the signing of new "presidential policy guidance" on when the U.S. can use drone strikes, though it was unclear what that guidance entailed and whether Obama would outline its specifics in his remarks.

The president is expected to talk generally about the need for greater transparency in the drone strikes and may allude to the desire to give greater responsibility for those operations to the military. But he is likely to tread carefully on an issue that involves classified CIA operations.

In a letter Wednesday to congressional leaders, Attorney General Eric Holder said only one of the U.S. citizens killed in drone strikes beyond war zones ? Anwar al-Awlaki, who had ties to at least three attacks planned or carried out on U.S. soil ? was specifically targeted by American forces. He said Mohammad and the other two Americans were not targeted in the U.S. strikes.

Pakistan's incoming government, which will be led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, is under pressure from the public and the courts to stop U.S. drone strikes. Sharif said shortly after his party won the May 11 election that the drones violate Pakistan's sovereignty.

Some analysts have questioned how hard Sharif would push the U.S. since the number of strikes has fallen precipitously from a peak of more than 120 in 2010 to close to a dozen so far this year. It could depend on how much he needs the U.S. in other areas.

Even if Sharif wanted to shut down the U.S. drone program, he would have to contend with the wishes of the Pakistani army, which is believed to guide the country's policy toward the strikes.

Rolls-Royce wins engine order from U.S. lessor CIT

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Rolls-Royce has won a contract to supply engines to power 23 Airbus aircraft ordered by U.S. leasing company CIT Aerospace, it said on Wednesday.

Rolls, the world's second-largest maker of aircraft engines behind U.S. group General Electric , said the deal included Trent XWB engines to power 10 A350 aircraft and Trent 700 engines for 13 Airbus A330 jets.

The Trent XWB, specifically designed for the Airbus A350, is the fastest selling Trent engine ever, with more than 1,200 already sold, according to Rolls. The A350 is due to enter service in 2014.

Rolls-Royce did not give a value for the CIT deal.

Last month Rolls said it had won a $1.6 billion order from British Airways parent IAG for Trent XWB engines to power 18 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, including a support package.

Link between childhood ADHD and obesity revealed in first long-term study

May 20, 2013 ? A new study conducted by researchers at the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center found men diagnosed as children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were twice as likely to be obese in a 33-year follow-up study compared to men who were not diagnosed with the condition.

The study appears in the May 20 online edition of Pediatrics.

"Few studies have focused on long-term outcomes for patients diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. In this study, we wanted to assess the health outcomes of children diagnosed with ADHD, focusing on obesity rates and Body Mass Index," said lead author Francisco Xavier Castellanos, MD, Brooke and Daniel Neidich Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Child Study Center at NYU Langone. "Our results found that even when you control for other factors often associated with increased obesity rates such as socioeconomic status, men diagnosed with ADHD were at a significantly higher risk to suffer from high BMI and obesity as adults."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders, often diagnosed in childhood and lasting into adulthood. People with ADHD typically have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors and tend to be overly active. ADHD has an estimated worldwide prevalence of five percent, with men more likely to be diagnosed than women.

The prospective study included 207 white men diagnosed with ADHD at an average age of 8 and a comparison group of 178 men not diagnosed with childhood ADHD, who were matched for race, age, residence and social class. The average age at follow up was 41 years old. The study was designed to compare Body Mass Index (BMI) and obesity rates in grown men with and without childhood ADHD.

Results showed that, on average, men with childhood ADHD had significantly higher BMI (30.1 vs. 27.6) and obesity rates (41.1 percent vs. 21.6 percent) than men without childhood ADHD.

"The results of the study are concerning but not surprising to those who treat patients with ADHD. Lack of impulse control and poor planning skills are symptoms often associated with the condition and can lead to poor food choices and irregular eating habits," noted Dr. Castellanos. "This study emphasizes that children diagnosed with ADHD need to be monitored for long-term risk of obesity and taught healthy eating habits as they become teenagers and adults."

The research was supported by grants MH-18579 and T32 MH-067763 from the National Institute of Mental Health, grant DA-16979 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and grant PIOF-253103 from the European Commission.

Co-authors of the study include Salvatore Mannuzza, PhD (retired); Samuele Cortese, MD, PhD, of the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cowen Institute for Pediatric Neuroscience and Verona University, Italy; Erika Proal, PhD, of the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cowen Institute for Pediatric Neuroscience and Neuroingenia, Mexico; Rachel G. RolePlayGateway?

So, this is my first post! Please read and let me know what you think, and if you want a second part! I am basing this off of Romeo and Juliet, with a modern twist. If you have read the play, just letting you know that there's alot of stuff changed...I hope y'all like it!!!

    JULIET:

I slam the door to my bedroom shut; the picture frames on the wall shake, causing me to wince. I can still hear my parents' screams though, along with my nanny trying to to convince them. I know it will be futile.

    My life is over.

I'm sure you'd like me to explain what is going on, considering you just read my little monologue, there. My name is Juliet Capulet. Yes, THE Juliet Capulet. I know my parents own half of Verona, and I know that we're loaded, but I don't care about that anymore. I don't care of what my parents think, I don't care what everyone at Verona High thinks, all I care about is my prince. My Romeo. Romeo Montague.

The crazy thing about our relationship is that we've only known each other for a few weeks. We met at a party that my cousin was throwing; some Bar Mitzvah or whatever. Anyways, Romeo and his friends crashed over there. Normally, I wouldn't talk to a Montague; my parents warned me to stay away from them. Something about an ancient grudge, but I didn't take it too seriously. I guess someone forgot to pay back a bet or something.

Anyways, I was hanging with my friend Rosalie, who rumor has it, used to have some history with Romeo. That's why she hooked us up in the first place. They broke up, but were still like brother and sister. She wanted him to get over her, I guess. I was reluctant at first; not because he was a Montague. I didn't find out about that until much later. I was reluctant because everyone was pressuring me into dating the school hunk, Paris. They said we were a match made in heaven. Yeah, right. Paris was all good looks and money, but no brain. Well...I guess I'm good looks and money too, but at least i try to make something of myself.

So, Rosalie asks Paris to get us some drinks, and then she gives me THE WINK. She is about to introduce me to Romeo, or whatever his name is. I look around for him, guessing I would recognize him from the way Rosalie talks about him.

After about five minutes of searching, I see the front doors burst open. Standing in the threshold, is the most beautiful boy I have ever seen...

Feds to boost child care center monitoring and employee background checks

The federal government will propose today an overhaul of federally funded child care centers in the United States. Their to-do list includes strengthening safety standards and getting states to inspect facilities?unannounced.

Federal health officials say they will propose Thursday to overhaul federally funded child care centers across the country, beefing up safety standards including background and fingerprint checks for employees and requiring states to better monitor the facilities.

Roughly 1.6 million US children attend child care centers on subsidies from the federal government. But health, safety, and program quality requirements for those facilities vary widely and states monitor them through a patchwork of rules, according to three senior administration officials, who spoke about the proposed rules to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly before Thursday's scheduled announcement.

The proposed changes are part of a broader agenda by President Barack Obama to ensure health and safety across all early learning environments and to improve the quality of facilities and their workers to prepare children for kindergarten.

US Department of Health and Human Services officials said the rules would increase accountability among child care providers and improve transparency so parents know more about the facility their child is attending. States would have to comply with the standards to receive the federal funds.

Workers would undergo fingerprinting and background checks and be required to receive training in first aid, CPR, safe sleeping for babies, and poison prevention, the officials said. The proposal also would set guidelines for transporting children in an effort to reduce the number of deaths of children left in cars.

States also would be required to conduct unannounced, in-person inspections at each child care center. States vary widely on how they monitor child care centers, with some allowing self-certification for facilities to check off on a mailed-in form whether they have smoke detectors and safety plans. That wouldn't fly under the new rule, the officials said.

Many parents mistakenly think their child care facilities are already following these measures, and the officials said they want to better inform families about facilities' track records. The proposed rules would require all states to post licensing, health, and safety inspection records online in plain language. About 30 states already do so, officials said.

The rules also would require all states to use a rating system for quality issues, including curriculum and learning environment. About half the states already use such a system.

Accessibility to government-funded child care also is addressed. The proposal would encourage states to give more flexibility to families and to address care for children while unemployed parents look for work.

MOOCs and the education revolution - Rebane&#39;s Ruminations

    George Rebane

[This is the transcript of my 4jan13 KVMR commentary.? I last covered MOOCs in my 21aug12 post.]

Let?s consider higher education for bit tonight, especially its cost, relevance, and the impact of learning technologies on traditional ways of delivering education products.?? Our post-secondary education and its graduates are the national jewel that affects every American?s quality of life.? As a stake in the ground, consider that our population growth has slowed to under one percent per year, which still translates to adding almost 3M people annually.? With demographic lags, we currently pump out about 4M young people a year into our job markets.

Everyone knows that they will earn more, the more post-high school education they get.? And everyone is told they are college material, and are encouraged to borrow money and apply for scholarships to pay for college.? This encouragement has been so successful that outstanding student loans now amount to over $1T nationwide.? On the whole, it?s hard to see how much of this debt will be paid off given that many or most college students select majors that don?t teach marketable skills.? The Atlantic reports that ?53% of recent college grads are under- or unemployed?.

Distinguished professor Richard Vedder of Ohio University tells us, ?In 2009, spending by Americans for post-secondary education totaled $461B, an amount 42% greater than in 2000, after accounting for inflation. This $461B is the equivalent of 3.3% of total U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) and an amount greater than the total GDP of countries such as Sweden, Norway and Portugal.?, adding that? ??more than 17 million college graduates were ?underemployed? in 2008.??? For many college graduates ?Would you like fries with that?? is a recurring theme across the land.

Many educators and employers, especially those who can?t find enough qualified workers, tell us that not everyone needs to go into debt getting a mushy major.?? Most high school graduates are not ready for a college education, and would do much better for their careers by learning a marketable skill set that is confirmed by various accepted levels of certification.? And to do that, more and more young people and older workers needing to change careers are turning to online education and training courses.? The acronym to remember is MOOC ? massively open online course.

MOOCs are now being delivered by major universities like Harvard, MIT, Duke, and Stanford, and additionally through private companies like Udacity and Coursera, often founded by academics.? MOOCs are free and open to the masses, and cover a widening range of subjects from the sciences to liberal arts.? These online courses are taken by students from all over the world with tens of thousands attending a single course.

Most MOOCs don?t yet count for credit toward a degree, but that is also changing as methods are developed to allow students to take proctored exams.? Venture capitalists have taken an interest, and are now investing in for-profit education companies that deliver MOOCs.? The industry is still in its infancy, and, as reported in the 2jan13 WSJ, they are still looking for viable business models.? Some candidate models incorporate job placement services to students who successfully complete courses.

In the meanwhile, there is some pushback from college presidents, many of whom are paid in the multiple millions per year.? But I believe they will be swept aside as the demand for skilled workers dovetails with millions of people who want to upgrade their skills and get good paying jobs.? MOOCs and new automated learning technologies will rapidly obsolete exorbitantly expensive institutions with gleaming student unions sporting steam baths and climbing walls, huge athletic programs, managed by top-heavy administrative staffs, and offering feel-good fields of study that aren?t worth a warm bucket of spit on the job markets.

Recall the ancient teachers lecturing their eager students in the shade of a tree.? We look forward to thousands of teachers again teaching under the virtual trees of the internet, trees that can shade untold of thousands of students who will be more eager than ever to learn something useful.

My name is Rebane, and I expand on this and related themes on georgerebane.com where the linked transcript of this commentary is posted, and where such issues are debated extensively.? However these views are not necessarily shared by KVMR.? Thank you for listening.
