CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa ? Luke Franzenburg ?04, Amy Marshall ?04, Luke Slaymaker ?04 and Meredith Austin VanderZee ?04 will be inducted into the Mount Mercy Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 1 as part of the University?s Alumni Games activities.
Franzenburg (top left), from Keystone, played two years of baseball for the Mustangs. He was a two-time NAIA honorable mention all-American (2002-03, 2003-04) and two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete (2002-03, 2003-04). Franzenburg earned NAIA all-Region VII and all-Midwest Classic Conference honors twice as well.
Franzenburg holds career records for saves (20), strikeouts per nine innings (9.61) and lowest opponent batting average (.194). His earned run average of 2.52 is second in school history, his 51 appearances are seventh and he ranks 10th all-time with 84 strikeouts. Franzenburg saved 12 games in 2003, which is second on Mount Mercy?s single-season list.
Marshall (top right), from Farmington, is the only cross country athlete in school history to win four conference titles and qualify for four NAIA cross country national meets (2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04). The four-time Harrier of the Year was also a four-time NAIA all-Region VII performer and a three-time academic all-conference award winner. She also holds the school?s 5K school record (19:03).
In track & field, Marshall was a two-time NAIA outdoor national meet qualifier (2002-03, 2003-04). She was an MCC outdoor champion and all-MCC standout in 2004 and holds the school record in the 2,000 meter steeplechase (7:48.89).
Slaymaker (bottom left), from Center Point, has the best career scoring average of any men?s golfer in school history (75.22). He was a two-time NAIA all-American (2002-03, 2003-04) and NAIA all-Region VII player. Slaymaker was named all-conference three times (2000-01, 2001-02, 2003-04) and earned academic all-conference awards three times (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04).
Slaymaker also posted three of the top five single-season scoring marks in school history. His 74.20 average during the 2003-04 campaign is tied for first all-time. Slaymaker averaged 74.80 strokes per round in 2002-03 which ranks third, and his 75.50 total in 2001-02 sits fifth in school history.
VanderZee (bottom right), from Rock Rapids, was a four-time all-conference selection for the women?s basketball team (2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04) and the Midwest Classic Conference Most Outstanding Performer at the 2003-04 MCC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She was a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete (2002-03, 2003-04) and three-time academic all-conference choice (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04) in women?s basketball and track & field.
In basketball, VanderZee finished with 1,584 points, which currently ranks eighth in school history. She also is fourth in career 3-point goals (178), fifth in free throws made (332) and sixth in career scoring average (13.1 ppg). Her 74 3-point goals in 2001-02 are the fifth-highest single-season total at Mount Mercy.
In track & field, VanderZee qualified for the NAIA outdoor national meet in 2002-03 and was also an MCC outdoor champion in 2003-04. Twice she was all-conference in outdoor track & field (2002-03, 2003-04). VanderZee has the top five marks in school history in the heptathlon, has the second-fastest time ever in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.48) and third-best time in the 400 meter dash (:59.98).
